SANDWICH – Recommendations are being finalized by the Sandwich Economic Initiative Corporation for three artist shanties in town.
The idea comes from Hyannis which has been running a successful shanty program for many years.
SEIC President Richard Johnson said the proposed location is perfect.
“We’re going to recommend that three shanties be built in Mill Creek Park adjacent to town hall. It has major traffic from the glass museum to downtown. There’s electricity and also a restroom.”
Local nonprofits have been asked if they have any interest in handling maintenance and operations, but so far there are no takers.
The economic development group consists of nine members who serve three-year terms.
Johnson said that building the shanties may be free. “We could get a grant for the construction. We estimate them to be $5,000 a piece, so we need a grant for $15,000.”
Weekly rent will be around $200 and artists from various genres will be presented.
The project still needs selectmen approval.
