Police Warn of Two Phone Scams

ScamBARNSTABLE – Barnstable police are warning residents about two telephone scams circulating around town.

Police say one involves a person pretending to be from Publisher’s Clearing House, claiming the recipient will win money if they send in $500.

The other hoaxer claims to be from the IRS, asking victims to purchase a prepaid cash card and read them the card’s numbers.

Barnstable Police Sergeant Sean Sweeney reminds citizens that if something sounds too good to be true, it is.

“The guy comes across as very polite, very nice—and that’s the laying of the scam,” Sweeney said. “Anything that asks you to send money, and then they’ll send you money back—a red flag should go up.”

Police ask residents to call in to the police department if they are the target of either scam.
