Preventative Maintenance A Must For Cold Winter Driving

HYANNIS – With frigid temperatures upon us, it’s important to make sure your car has preventative maintenance.  According to John Paul,  AAA Northeast Senior Manager, it’s essential for safe driving and decreases the chance of being stranded.

There are many steps that are highly recommended.

Have the battery and charging system tested if your battery is more than three years old.  At 32 degrees it can take up to 30% more power to start a cold engine.

Check the coolant level in the overflow tank.  A 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze will keep your engine safe down to minus 34 degrees.

Only use washer fluid that is rated well below freezing.

Make sure your wiper blades clear the glass completely with each swipe.  Remember that warming up your engine for a long time is unnecessary, even in severe cold.

More tips can be found at the AAA website.
