NEW BEDFORD – The Buzzards Bay Swim is celebrating its 25th anniversary this summer and registration is open for the fundraising event.

The swim, on June 30, raises money for the Buzzards Bay Coalition, a non-profit organization which works to protect clean water in the region.

Residents across the region can join more than 300 people swimming in this year’s event.

The swim features a scenic point-to-point course across outer New Bedford Harbor.

Assisted by the U.S. Coast Guard and a local safety patrol, swimmers traverse 1.2 miles through the harbor and channel, passing by the iconic Butler Flats Lighthouse and the New Bedford Hurricane Barrier – one of the largest stone structures on the East Coast.

At the finish, swimmers are welcomed with a beach party featuring a live steel drum band, pancakes cooked to order, gourmet coffee, free massages, and local beer.

The cost is $25 to register and participants must raise at least $150 in donations. To register visit savebuzzardsbay.org.

Individuals who do not wish to swim can sign up as a volunteer on land or paddling a kayak. To volunteer contact the event manager Deborah Hood by emailing [email protected] or calling 508-999-6363 extension 207.
