HYANNIS PORT – Actors Bill Murray, Dennis Haysbert and Matt McCoy joined with other celebrities Friday in Hyannis Port for the 27th Annual Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Golf Tournament.
The event was expected to raise more than $600,000 for RFK Human Rights, an organization which campaigns for human rights in 28 countries, including the United States.
It was formed to honor Robert F. Kennedy following his assassination in 1968.
His widow, Ethel Kennedy, was joined by more than 150 guests, and her daughter, Kerry Kennedy, at the Hyannis Port Golf Club.
“We’re really looking at the issue of bail reform, where people who live in poverty are really targeted for the criminal justice system really much more,” said Kerry Kennedy.
“For 27 years our golfers have given a boost to courageous Human Rights defenders in 35 countries including the United States, who fight for access to education, health care, fair wages and seeking justice and equality,” Ethel Kennedy said.
This year’s event comes a month before Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights presents its annual human rights award to U.S. criminal justice reform advocates Andrea James and Glenn E. Martin.
Kerry Kennedy said it was heartening to see some many participants come back year after year.
“It’s being with the people who love you, who have experienced your triumphs and disasters and have supporter you and you’ve supported throughout,” she said.
