Cape Cod National Seashore Completes Eastham Pedestrian Project

EASTHAM – The Cape Cod National Seashore has announced that roadwork on the pedestrian crossing beacon at the intersection of Governor Prence Road and Route 6 has been finished.

“All that work is done,” said Chief of Facilities and Maintenance for the Cape Cod National Seashore Karst Hoogeboom.

“All the traffic barriers that were there for a couple of weeks are gone now, and it’s just going to sit there until the springtime, when we re-activate the project.”

Construction began in October to provide pedestrians and bicyclists with a flashing beacon to alert vehicles of their intentions to cross the busy, four-lane Route 6.

“Traffic has been a great concern in the town of Eastham. This is one more effort to provide an ability to cross Route 6 safely,” Hoogeboom said.

Several other self-activated flashing beacons have been installed across the Cape Cod National Seashore, but this beacon is activated by those looking to cross the road manually; the street light will continuously flash yellow until activated, before then flashing red and then turning to a solid red to properly alert drivers of pedestrians and bikers.

Hoogeboom said the plan is to get this beacon fully operational by the busy summer season.
