Sandwich Arts Alliance Finds a Home

SANDWICH – More than for years after they were first founded, the Sandwich Arts Alliance finally has a home.

Officials with the organization have announced that they have signed a two-year lease for a building located on Route 6A. The space will allow them to finally showcase visual, literary, and performing arts to both members, residents, and visitors to the community.

“In those early years there was no thought of a building,” said Joanne Westwood, the Alliance’s Executive Director, “The group formed as a grassroots effort by artists helping artist, and with the idea of being a voice for the arts in Sandwich.”

Since the beginning, the group has offered roughly two-dozen events each year – geared toward both youth and adults across the Winter, Fall, and Spring seasons. Up until this point, these events have been held at Town Hall, the public library, local businesses, private homes, and other public spaces.

The Alliance expects to occupy the 1,600 square-foot facility by late this may and will make a number of changes including removing three existing walls to open up the space, and adding two classrooms.

The organization was launched in 2015 by Waterhouse with support from the town’s cultural committee and chamber of commerce, and now boast nearly 300 members.

“None of us had any idea that there were so many amazing artists in Sandwich,” Westwood said, “And we know there are still more we haven’t found or who are already successful working on their own.”
