Sandwich Library Reopens After Car Crash Knocks Out Power

lightbulbsSANDWICH – The Sandwich Library reopened today after being forced to shut down last Friday.

A car accident in the library parking lot on Friday morning at about 9:45, just after the library opened, damaged the building’s electric system, causing the library to lose power.

The electricity loss also caused some smoke damage inside the library.

The library was closed for the rest of the day Friday and all day Saturday. The library was then closed Sunday and Monday keeping with its regular schedule.

“We needed to have a very large contingent of NSTAR crews come in and then we needed to have our electrical contractor to restore power to the library building and then to assess damage to the interior,” Sandwich Library Director Joanne Lamothe said.

With four closed days in a row, library staff had their work cut out for them this morning.

Lamothe said, “We did have a number of people that wanted to visit the library over the weekend. We’re all scrambling right now. We have hundreds and hundreds of returns.”

The deadline for signing up for the library’s summer reading program for children was Friday, so Lamothe said that deadline has been extended until today since the library was closed most of Friday.
