SANDWICH – Sandwich selectmen recently approved the appointment of a Boston-based architectural firm to work on the town’s new senior center project.

Bargmann Hendrie+Archetype has been chosen by the town to create a design for the center. Five firms were candidates for the bid.

Town Manager Bud Dunham told the board that he and other town officials are extremely satisfied with BH+A’s proposal.

“When we expressed some concern on some costs, they went back and sharpened their pencils in a few areas and included a few extra services that we were hoping would be in there,” Dunham said.

“So, they’ve really addressed every concern that we’ve had.”

The project is slated to cost $16.5 million in total. Around $13.2 million would be used for construction costs, and around $200,000 would be spent on furnishings.

BH+A has designed over 20 senior centers in the region, including the one in Falmouth that is set to hold its grand opening ceremony next week.

“If you go to some of the best senior-focused facilities on Southeastern Mass, this architect has done many, many, many of them,” Dunham said, citing the quality of the centers that BH+A has worked on.

Expenses for the scope of work that include things such as civil engineering, architecture, and interior design will cost just shy of $1.3 million.

Allowances for additional analysis and features totaling $60,600 have been broken off of the base contract, and can be added on in the future if the town decides they want to include them in the plans.
