HARWICH – The Saquatucket Harbor Development Committee presented Harwich selectmen with its preliminary proposals for the former Downey property this month.
“We had a lot of great participation from the public at our meetings, and provided us valuable input as we went through the process,” said Harwich Harbormaster John Rendon.
The draft site plan was presented by Committee Chairman Matt Hart, and included around 80 new parking spaces surrounding a proposed multipurpose building fronting Route 28.
The front of the building would include a consolidated ticket office for charter and ferry boats operating from the harbor, and the rear would provide space for harbor maintenance equipment.
The building could also include office space that could be leased to generate revenue for the town.
Rendon said they have three things to improve on with the property.
“Improve the safety of operations, improve the efficiency of operations, and enhance our harbor to attract more of not only the boating public, but most importantly, the non-boating public,” said Rendon.
The work at the former Downey property is designed to complement planned improvements along the water side of Saquatucket Harbor, which voters will consider funding at the next town meeting.

Larry Ballantine is not even a selectman let alone chairman. Peter Hughes is the current Chairman of the Harwich Board of Selectmen.
