BARNSTABLE – After 143 days at sea, severe weather conditions from Hurricane Joaquin have put an end to British Adventurer Sarah Outen’s attempt to row across the Northern Atlantic Ocean.
Outen, who left Chatham on May 14 and was headed to Falmouth, England, was picked up early this morning by a nearby cargo boat that was headed to Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Outen’s boat “Happy Socks” was left at sea due to the complexity of the pickup.
“I shed a whole lot of tears these last few hours once we made the call that it was going to happen,” said Outen on her website’s phonecast.
The ship is expected to reach Montreal in a week.
Outen recently celebrated 1,000 miles to go until her journey across the Atlantic was finished and was hoping to make landfall late this month, into next month.
“One hundred and forty three days, that’s still an amazing journey out here, I feel privileged, I’m grinning,” said Outen.
