WELLFLEET –Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr (R-First Essex and Middlesex) and Senator Julian Cyr (D-Cape and Islands) visited Wellfleet on Tuesday to meet with those working in the shellfish aquaculture industry in the town.
Staff from the publicly-funded Southeastern Massachusetts Aquaculture Center (SEMAC), based in Barnstable County, were on hand to explain the monitoring of water quality, oyster and quahog growth, and shellfish growing experiments carried out to support the industry.
Second generation shellfish farmer Jake Puffer discussed the issues shellfishermen are facing and how SEMAC is helping them prepare for the future with its studies and data. Scott Soares is consulting coordinator for the Massachusetts Aquaculture Association.
SEMAC was founded in 1997 and its mission is to foster the sustainable development of private/public aquaculture endeavors within the southeastern Massachusetts through research and education.
