Young Candidate Announces Candidacy for 2nd Barnstable District

Aaron KanzerBARNSTABLE – A new Democratic candidate for the 2nd Barnstable District State Representative seat has stepped up to the plate – and he’s only 21 years old.

Aaron Kanzer of Cotuit, who is scheduled to graduate from Northeastern University this spring with a political science and economics degree, said he wants to bring a new voice and represent an age group he believes is unheralded.

“I want to be that type of young person who brings members of the community together,” Kanzer said. “The Cape needs a young person to be a leader because we have a lack of young people coming back to Cape Cod.”

Kanzer was appointed to the Barnstable Housing Committee last summer, and as a lifelong resident, he said he feels knowledgeable as to which issues are a priority.

Topics like affordable housing, wastewater treatment, homelessness and substance abuse need solutions and a fresh face to bring the community together, he said.

Additionally, Kanzer said he’d focus on stimulating the economy by increasing the tax base – a goal he said can be achieved by keeping more people in the community.

The young politician will have competition for that seat, however. Last week, Barnstable Town Councilor William Crocker announced his Republican candidacy.
