CAPE LEAGUE TODAY: Murphy, Dawson Homer for Firebirds, Whitecaps Roll

FALMOUTH – Wright State’s Sean Murphy homered in the eighth inning and Ohio State’s Ronnie Dawson hammered a two-run bomb in the ninth for good measure as the Orleans Firebirds put on a 15-hit, 11-run hitting clinic at Elmer “Guv” Fuller Field last night in an 11-2 rout over the host Falmouth Commodores.

It was Dawson’s sole hit of the night but for Murphy his homer was the icing on a 3-5 day at the plate that included two runs batted in.

Orleans third baseman Nick Zammarelli also went 3-5 on the day with two RBI for the visiting Firebirds as Orleans maintained its increasing grip on first place atop the Cape League’s East Division.

Brewster Whitecaps and Y-D Red Sox Belt Four Home Runs but ‘Caps Prevail

SOUTH YARMOUTH – The Brewster Whitecaps got home runs from Robbie Tenerowicz (Cal-Berkeley) and catcher Cassidy Brown (Loyola Marymount) last night at Merrill “Red” Wilson Field, as the guests downed the Y-D Red Sox, 9-4.

Brown went 3-5 on the night with two runs batted in while Tennessee’s Nick Senzel went 3-4 with two RBI and Tenerowicz finished at 2-4 with two RBI as well.

Perhaps one of the most impressive statistics of the night was not necessarily Brewster’s 16-hit rampage, however, as lefty reliever Anthony Arias (Fresno State) came in in the fourth inning and struck out 10 batters in the final four frames of the game, while walking just one.

It was the Fresno State southpaw’s first Cape League victory on the mound in seven appearances.
