It has to be slightly nerve-wracking to be a high school competitive gymnast in the first place, always on your own trying to earn valuable points for your team. It can’t possibly be easy trying to live up to 10 state championship titles and 14 south sectional titles and 16 conference championships, not to fail to mention competing when half your team is ill or injured and everything is on the line. Even though she’s about 4’10” or thereabouts, none of those things phased Barnstable High junior gymnast Tali Twomey Saturday when she stole the show for the Red Raiders and led them with her All-Around victory in the state south sectionals. Twomey basically held down the Barnstable fort with her stellar performance and gave her team a chance to defend its state championship title this Saturday at Algonquin Regional.
Speaking of state championships, Dennis-Yarmouth’s junior track star Madison Pawlina knows a little bit about those. Pawlina captured the MIAA Division 4 300-Meter State Championship last week at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury Crossing. Finishing in first place with a time of 42.39 seconds, Pawlina edged out Emma Marlow-Benedick of Weston High by 0.07 seconds. As a sophomore, Pawlina took third place in the 300m race but this year reached the top along with a select group of fellow Dolphins who also fared well last week at the states and for the second straight season took home the MIAA Sportsmanship Award.
