Red Raider Volleyballers Blank Medfield

MEDFIELD – Playing an inspired brand of volleyball, the Barnstable High boys made it two straight wins Thursday night, defeating host Medfield High, 3-0.

Junior co-captain Scott Sawyer led the charge once again, joined by senior co-captain Donnie Mach, as the dynamic pair combined for 29 kills and 10 defensive digs in Barnstable’s second win this week. The Red Raiders need that kind of performance, head coach Marylou Martin said after the match, with rival North Quincy on tap for Monday (April 6).

“We had a slow starting point,” Martin said. “But they are beginning to get comfortable with each other. The energy tonight was different.”

Barnstable defeated Medfield in three straight sets – 25-18, 25-15 and 25-12 – for the 3-0 shutout. Mach had 13 kills and six digs, while Sawyer had 16 kills and four digs. Mach tacked on six aces in the effort.

Scott McNair played a superlative defense for the Red & White net men, tallying 11 digs in all. Senior co-captain Harrison West-Mather turned in 28 assists and had five aces.

“They were sure fired up out there tonight,” Martin said. “They were all pumped up. We have a big, big game Monday night at home versus North Quincy. I hope we can fill the gym (with fans). It makes a difference.”

Barnstable is now 2-1 on the season.
