West-Mather Sets School Record but Red Raiders Fall to North Quincy

NORTH QUINCY – Barnstable High senior co-captain Harrison West-Mather set a new Red Raider school volleyball record with 54 assists Monday evening on the road, but it was not enough for a win as host North Quincy prevailed, 3-2.

The hosts won the first set, 25-19, but Barnstable battled back to take the second set, 25-21. With both teams battling for court supremacy, North Quincy took set number three, 26-24. Barnstable would not go down quietly, however, and took he fourth set, 25-16.

In the tiebreaker, North Quincy ended up on top, 16-14.

“Basically, we struggled with defense tonight,” head coach Marylou Martin said. “And they had great defense. We had good offense and our boys played hard but North Quincy wanted it more.”

In addition to setting a new Barnstable High School single game record for assists (54), West-Mather added five digs, while Jamie Walsh and Matt Teague each added nine digs.

Co-captains Scott Sawyer Jr. and Donnie Mach combined for a remarkable 51 kills on the night, with Mach netting 26 and Sawyer Jr. netting 25. Mach also had nine defensive digs and Sawyer Jr. had 18 digs, a superlative effort in both instances.

“It was a tough loss,” Coach Martin said. “But they fought hard to the end.”

Barnstable, now 6-4 on the season, faces Durfee on the road tomorrow and then welcomes BC High on Thursday night at 5:30 pm.
